Winter is the season for hot chocolate and marshmallows, relaxing with some red wine in front of the fireplace, snuggles, early nights, spending time indoors and lots of layers of clothing.
Being winter ready means different things for different countries. In South Africa we don't have snowfall in our residential areas, so we don't have to get our homes and cars ready for heavy snowfalls.
I will therefore give a few pointers on your clothing, bedding, fireplace and the outside gutters and downpipes of your house.

1. Unpack the electric blankets, let them air, make sure they still work. If not, replace them.
2. Take out the normal blankets from storage and take it to the dry cleaners.
3. Check whether your winter bedding is still in a good condition. If not, buy new ones.
4. Unpack your winter jackets and take it to the dry cleaners.
5 Check whether your winter pajamas, gowns and slippers are still in a good condition and that it still fits. If not, buy new ones.
6. Stock up on either gas or wood for your fireplace. And don't forget the red wine.
7. Check the down pipes and gutters that it is not blocked. In the event of heavy rainfalls, it will cause overflow of water if it is blocked.

Winter is not my favourite season. It is just too cold for me, but I love the fireplace and the electric blankets. Few things beat that feeling of getting into a warm bed on a cold night.

Email is a wonderful thing! It is quick, effective, productive and instantaneous. However, if you don't take control over your email, it will make you less productive, it can be disruptive, it will impact the quality of your work and meeting your deadlines.

I have a few rules around emails:
  1. Turn off the notifications - it is disruptive and impact your train of thought.
  2. Have allocated times during the day where you check your emails.
The 4 key elements of your email:
  1. Inbox
  2. Sent box
  3. Spam folder
  4. Trash folder

Inbox
Group your inbox by either "received from" or "received by date". Go for the easy emails first, e.g. marketing emails. If you don't want to receive emails from them, click on the unsubscribe button in the email to stop the emails.
Secondly, emails that you can sort out within a few seconds, e.g. making a note in your diary. Once done, you either delete the email or save it in a specific folder.
You are then left with emails that require your attention, time and action. Attend to these emails within the scheduled timeslots in your diary.
Therefore, your inbox should only have emails that require action from your side.

Sent box
Your sent box should only have emails that you are awaiting responses or action from. All other sent emails should either be deleted or saved into the specific folders. Your sent box is an excellent way to stay on top of deliverables.

Spam folder
Check the spam folder once a day to ensure that there is no work or personal specific emails in there. Delete all the other emails.

Trash folder
At the end of your working day, clean out the trash folder. The emails in there serve no purpose.
Filing system
It is important to keep record of certain emails. Create subfolders as needed, e.g. people in your household, projects you are working on, etc. You then drag and drop the relevant emails from your inbox or sent box into these folders for reference or evidence purposes.

Seven sunday habits to reset yourself for the upcoming week and to be better prepared.

1. No-technology Sunday
A big ask, most definitely!
However, once you are in the habit of doing this, you will realise that spending time with your loved-ones are much better than being on wifi. At 6pm you can go back into the virtual world.

2. Write a to-do-list for the week
This will give you a clear vision of what's to come. You will also realise what is important, urgent and not relevant.

3. Schedule things in your planner
After writing your to-do-list, grab your planner and write down the important dates and activities.

4. Meal prep
I plan my meals for the upcoming week. I will go through recipes and ask the people in the household, what they would like to eat. I cook my meals during the week.
If you don't have time in the week, then prepping your meals on a Sunday, will save you time, stress and money.

5. Plan your outfits
This will save you time and worries in the morning. You will also have extra 5 minutes to snooze.

6. Make time for self-care
Sundays are best to relax and do things that is good for your soul and for your body.

7. Go to bed early
It is important to have a good night of sleep so you can have enough energy to tackle the week ahead.

Happy organizing!

Goal setting is important to focus on what you want to achieve and on the things that matter. Remember to revisit your goals at least annually to check that they are still in line with your short-term and long-term vision.

There are 5 keys to goal setting:
1. Decide on a system, e.g. SMART goals
2. Your goals must be in writing.
3. Create an action plan to achieve your goals. Break it down into measurable actions.
4. Schedule these actions into your planner and to-do-list.
5. Stick with your goals. Remember why you set them.

I use the SMART-system when setting goals:
1. S = Specific
Goals must be clear and specific. Know what it is and how you can break it down into actions.
2. M = Measurable
You must allocate a measurement to your goals to monitor progress.
3. A = Attainable
Your goals must be achievable. If you cannot achieve it, you set yourself up for failure.
4. R = Relevant
Your goals must send you in the direction of achieving your vision. Therefore, the goals must be relevant to the vision.
5. T = Time-bound
A timeline must be allocated to your goals in order for you to measure whether you are on track with achieving your goals.

May you achieve your dreams and goals this year. Wishing you an amazing 2018.

You never know when you will hear that flapping sound of a flat tyre!
It can happen on any road, on any surface, in any weather conditions and at any time of the day or night. So best is, be prepared.

4 key essentials
1.       Have the required tools
2.       Nice to have tools
3.       Vehicle maintenance
4.       Safe location
Tools needed:
1.       The car manufacturer supplies your car with all the tools needed to change the tyre.
2.     You can also check the owner’s manual of your vehicle to check whether you have all the required tools.
3.       Regularly check and inspect the tools for completeness, items that need to be changed, rusted items or out of date items.
4.       If your car didn’t come with these tools, you can buy it from an automobile or car parts shop.
5.       Check the spare tyre’s pressure and tread on a regular basis.
6.       You will need the following:
a.       Spare tyre
b.      A jack
c.       Nut wrench
d.      Sharp knife to remove cable ties if used
e.      Tyre blocks to prevent the car from moving
f.        Emergency warning triangle

Nice to have tools
1.       Surgical or plastic gloves to keep your hands protected and clean.
2.       Wipes or water to clean your hands afterwards.
3.       A mat to kneel on and protect your clothing and knees.
4.       Disposable or plastic raincoat in the event of bad weather.
5.       Flashlight or headlight and extra batteries for when it is dark.
6.       Cash in the event of paying for something.
Vehicle maintenance
1.       Before going on a trip, get your car checked or where necessary, have it serviced.
2.       Check your tyres and the spare tyre for correct pressure, good thread and no signs of deterioration.
Safe location
1.       Be aware of your surroundings. Make sure it is safe.
2.       Get as far away as possible from oncoming traffic.
3.       Place the warning triangles at a safe distance behind your vehicle.
4.       Check the surface. You can’t change a tyre on soft, loose, uneven ground or on a hill.
5.       Remove all passengers from the vehicle and move them to a save place. If it is only you and your small children, leave them buckled up in the car.
Step-by-step guide on changing a tyre
1.       Get all your gear from the back of the car.
2.       Loosen the lug nuts.
3.       Lifting the car with a jack.
4.       Removing the tyre.
5.       Fitting the spare tyre.
6.       Lowering the vehicle.
7.       Clearing the scene.
Loosen the lug nuts
  • Get the tyre block in place or place a heavy object against the front or back tyres to block possible vehicle movement forward or backwards.
  • There is usually a mark behind the front wheels or in front of the rear wheels where the jack must be placed. Check that the jack is in contact with the metal portion of your car's frame.
  • Raise the jack until it is supporting (but not lifting) the car. The jack should be firmly in place against the underside of the vehicle.
  • Loosen the lug nuts (counter-clockwise), but don’t remove them just yet.
Lifting the car with a jack
  • Lift the car with the jack. Use fluid, even strokes when lifting the car.
  • You need to lift it high enough to remove the flat tyre and replace it with a spare.
  • As you lift, make sure that the car is stable. If you notice any instability, lower the jack and fix the problem before fully lifting the car.
  • Never put your body underneath a car lifted by a car jack in case the vehicle slips off.

Removing the tyre

  • Take off the loosened lug nuts and put them to the side. Secure them safely so they will not scatter and roll away, especially in the dark.
  • Remove the flat tyre. Do so slowly using both hands, lifting the wheel (on or off) with your hands in a 'ten minutes to four' position (or 'ten minutes past eight' if left-handed).
  • Never place your hands directly under the wheel, or put your leg or any part of your body under the car while it's jacked up.
  • Place the flat tyre under the vehicle so in the event of a jack failure the vehicle will fall on the old wheel, hopefully preventing injury.
  • This will also ensure that the tyre doesn't roll away from you.

Fitting the spare tyre

  • Glide the spare tyre onto the tyre bolts, pushing it back as far as it can go.
  • Take care to align the rim of the spare tyre with the wheel bolts, and then put on the lug nuts.
  • Tighten the nuts by hand as much as you can until they are all snug.
  • Put the lug nuts back on the tyre bolts in an alternating star pattern.
  • Using the wrench, tighten the nuts as much as possible using a star pattern. To ensure the tyre is balanced, don't completely tighten the nuts one at a time. Going in a star pattern around the tire, one nut across from another, give each nut a full turn until they are equally tight.
Lowering the vehicle

  • Remove the flat tyre from underneath the car.
  • Slowly lower the vehicle and remove the jack.
  • With the car back on the ground, you can now tighten the lug nuts.
  • Rather than tightening them one by one in order, start with one lug nut, tighten it about 50%, move to the opposite nut (across the circle) and tighten that one about the same amount.
  • Keep tightening opposite lug nuts gradually in turn until each lug nut is as tight as it can be.
  • Press on the end of the wrench for the best leverage. You can even use your foot, but make sure to keep your balance and steady yourself against the car.

Clearing the scene

  • Once the lug nuts are tightened, put your flat tyre and tools back in your trunk.
  • Make sure you don't leave anything on the side of the road.
  • Collect your emergency triangle or traffic cones.
I would highly recommend that you do a trial run on changing a tyre. Pick good weather and a good service when doing this. Changing a tyre for the first time is tricky and even more so when you are stressed about your safety while changing it. Be sure that you have all the tools, that you are safe and that you know what to do.

Happy organizing!

It is the beginning of summer in our part of the world. Spring is behind us and it is time to change winter bedding to summer bedding and winter wardrobes to summer wardrobes.

Items needed
1.       Vacuum storage bags
2.       Vacuum cleaner
3.       Paper and pen if you don’t have a printer
The vacuum storage bags are excellent to keep bedding and clothes clean and in a good condition. It is a brilliant space saver.

Instructions:
1.       Add all the blankets, electric blankets and seasonal clothing to the vacuum storage bags.
2.       Write or print on the paper what is in the bag and add the paper to the storage bag.
3.       The vacuum cleaner sucks out all the air and compresses the size.
DO NOT suck the air out of the bags where you put the electric blankets in. You will damage the wiring.
4.       Store accordingly.

While you at it:
Change of season is the perfect time to go through all the items that will be put away.
1.       Go through all the items and check whether:
a.       It is still in a good condition
                                                  i.      If not, discard or donate
ii.      Make a list of the items that must be replaced. Shop accordingly.
                                               iii.      If yes, store accordingly.
b.      It needs any alterations
                                                   i.      If yes, fix it, or have it fixed professionally.
                                                 ii.      If no, store accordingly.
c.       You still like it, if it still fits and if you still wear it
                                            i.      If yes, store accordingly.
ii.      If no, discard or donate.
iii.      Make a list of the items that must be replaced. Shop accordingly.

Storing your seasonal bedding and clothing properly will extend the lifetime and it stays in a good condition. By checking your seasonal bedding and clothing before you store it, you will be fully prepared for that season.

It is the beginning of December… that means one thing… silly season. Graduations, end-of-year functions, schools closing, concerts, buying presents, planning for the holidays, planning Christmas dinner and lunch, New Year’s party and back-to-school are all synonymous with the silly season. One is bound to lose your marbles.

4 key tips
1.       Breathe!
2.       Plan, plan, plan on a daily basis.
3.       Delegate responsibilities.
4.       Relax! Remember to have fun, this too shall pass.
Planning for the week ahead and then on a daily basis, is essential. Don’t get too bogged down about everything that must still happen. Focus daily on your tasks and you will get through all of it.

Christmas planning
1.       Plan your presents
a.       I go through all the contacts on my phone to double check that I have everybody on my list.
b.      Decide on an overall budget for all your presents.
c.       Take each person on your list and allocate an amount to them.
d.      Decide on the present, voucher, cash you want to give to each person.
e.      Make a list of all the presents, group them together as per the shops you need to go to. This will make shopping super quick and you will not spend more than what you planned to or can afford.
f.        The fun part is the wrapping. For me, how you present the gift is more valuable than the gift itself.
g.       Remember handwritten cards. It gives a special, personal touch to your gift.
h.      If you can’t by the gifts all at the same time, prioritise the buying of the gifts, e.g. gifts for teachers must be done before school close, etc.
i.         My goal is to have present-shopping done by the end of November.
2.       Christmas Eve dinner and Christmas day lunch
a.       Putting the right menu together and preparing all of it, can be stressful.
b.      In the beginning of December, plan your menus and table décor.
c.       Make a list of all the ingredients and décor you will need.
d.      Buy what you can in advance.
e.      Make a list of what must be bought and prepared a week before the time, 2 days before the time, 1 day before the time and on the day. This will take a lot of stress out of it.
f.        Delegate where you can.

Holidays
1.       Do not over-indulge! You will regret this when you return to exercise after the holidays.
2.       Stay healthy and keep on exercising, even if it is walking.
3.       Focus on portion control, make healthy choices at the restaurants and have treats in moderation.
4.       If you are going away, plan for the holidays.
a.       Make lists of what you need to take with and shop accordingly.
b.      Include everybody in the household with the packing and the unpacking on the other side.
c.       Put your feet up, relax and have fun.

Back-to-school
1.       Get the necessary stationery lists from the school.
2.       Check against what you have and make a list of things you need to buy.
3.       Shop accordingly, mark the stationery and put it in their schoolbags.
4.       Remember to check the quality and size of their school uniforms and shoes. Shop accordingly when you come back from holiday if your child is experiencing a growth-spurt, otherwise, refer point 5 below.
5.       Do these before you go on holiday, then you don’t have to worry about this, nor do you have to deal with busy stationery shops and out-of-stock issues.

The silly season is the end of the year. However, sometimes stressful, this is also the time to reflect back on your year – what you did well and what you need to improve on. It is a time to focus on your goals and what is good for you. Holiday time is bonding time with your family and loved-ones.

Happy organizing!
