Your motor vehicle is supposed to get you and your family from point A to point B. You will be
amazed at what can all accumulate in your car between those two points. Today, I want to share
some organizing tips for your car.

The boot/trunk of your car
In a previous video I shared tips on how to organize the boot of your car. You can view that video
form more information.

Always check the spare tyre that it is in working condition and that you have the necessary tools in
your car to change a flat/damaged tyre.

It is also handy to keep a set of jumping cables in case your car doesn’t want to start.

Door-space
I use the two front doors of my car as follows:

1. Driver door – in here I keep my sunglasses and my glasses that I need for night-driving. I also
keep an extra pen in here. I spend a lot of time in the car waiting for the children at school. I
utilise this time to do planning and work. The pen always comes in handy.
2. Passenger door – we use this as our trash can. Trash is really inevitable. A system is important;
otherwise it will end up all over the car. After each trip, we clean out the passenger door. An
idea I saw on Pinterest is to take a cereal/rice/sugar plastic container. Keep the container in the
car as your trash can.

Glove-compartment
I keep the following in here:

1. The manual of the car and the service history book.
2. Printouts from the insurance company. One is to tell you what to do when in an accident. The
other is where you fill in all the details of parties involved and witnesses to the accident. The last
copy contains my policy details and the contact details of my insurance broker. These printouts
are really useful when you are involved in an accident.
3. Wipes for sticky hands, tissues for running noses and spot cleaner for any stains on clothing.
4. A multi-tool.
5. An adapter to charge my mobile phone.
6. An extra pen, extra sunglasses and extra glasses for night driving.
7. You can also keep a mini first-aid kit in here. I have one in my handbag.

Backseat passengers

If you have children, this is usually the problem area. Use the available space wisely. I keep travelling
games in the hidden space provided on the back seat. A shoe-organizer works perfectly at the back
of the front seats. You can store all the toys in here. The rule in my car is that anything that the children bring into the car, they must take out again. It is not my responsibility to get their things out of my car.
Be careful of having too many things in your car. Although you might think that you are organized, it
will come across as being cluttered.
Happy organizing!

Travel tips

Our family just returned from 2 awesome weeks in Koh Samui, Thailand.
The journey from Cape Town to Koh Samui takes us 25 hours, with 2 stop overs, 1 in Dubai and 1 in Bangkok.
We have been travelling a lot as a family; however, I learnt a few things on this recent trip.

Duty-free shopping and gifts on the aeroplane for children
If you plan to do lots of duty-free shopping during your stop-overs, I would suggest the following:
Take an empty, cabin-size suitcase with you.
After all the shopping and the toys and books that the children receive on the aeroplane, you end up with so many loose bags, that do not fit into your backpacks. You need your hands on the airport with having to pull out your passports and boarding passes all the time. Being stuck with shopping bags becomes a bit frustrating.
Add all the shopping bags to the empty cabin-size suitcase. The same applies to the goodies that the children receive on the aeroplane. It makes the stop-overs and getting into the taxis just so much easier.

Passports
If you travel as a family, I would highly recommend that you label each passport on the outside with each family member’s name. You will not believe how many times a passport and boarding pass must be taken out.
It becomes time consuming to page through the passports to establish whose is whose.

Being in transit
Sometimes a stop-over at an airport can be very long. If you are travelling with children make sure you have enough snacks, water and activities for them. Food and beverages are very expensive at the airports, especially if your currency is not strong. As mentioned in a previous blog, pack all these items in your child’s backpack when leaving home. Also put in a warm jacket – some airports are very cold.
On Emirates we get sealed water cups. I keep these when we disembark. They come in very handy on the bus transits between the aircraft and the airport building.

Shopping while on holiday and packing
If you shop as much as I do during holidays, especially in Thailand, you will end up running out of space in your suitcases. Before heading out and buying an extra suitcase, try the following:
·         Roll-up all your clothing items. It takes much less space than folding the clothing.
·         All shopping – remove the packaging and price tags. If it is clothing, then roll these up too.
·         Utilise space, such as the inside of your shoes. Also use the space of your shopping, e.g. the inside of a décor item, bag or container.

Happy organizing!
