Maintenance 101

101 mean basic description.  Being organized isn’t limited to the cupboards in your house. For me, being organized is to have control over your life, your time and your house.

I am sharing tips on how to maintain your house/property, both on the inside and the outside. We so easily get use to a cupboard door that doesn’t close properly or a stain on a wall, or a mirror that must still be put up on the wall, that we don’t attend to it after a while. Therefore, I am doing Maintenance 101 to look with a different eye at my house.

So how do I do this?

1.       I created a template/Word document with the following sections:
a.       Interior
b.      Exterior

2.       These sections have three categories, per room:
a.       Maintenance
b.      Décor
c.       Nice to have

3.       I go through each room in my house and check from the ceiling to the floor for maintenance to be done by the handy man, décor items I still need to buy and items wanted that is costly and that must be saved for.

4.       I will update the template accordingly.

5.       The nice thing about the template is that I can give a list to the handy man, I know what to buy at the shops and I can budget and save for the nice to have items.

6.       Once maintenance is done, or I bought the décor or nice to have items, I will delete it from the template.

7.       Once every three months, I will go through the house again to make sure that the template is up to date.

8.       The same principle applies for the exterior of your property.

About the handy man

1.       It is advisable to get a handy man that is referred by word of mouth or known in your community.

2.       Find one that is reliable, thorough, solution-orientated and cost-effective.

3.       If you are from the Northern Suburbs in Cape Town, refer to Jack’s Toolbox (www.jackstoolbox.co.za). Jacques is highly recommended.

Why is it important to keep your hand on your property?

1.       You save money! If you do continuous maintenance, you won’t end up with huge maintenance issues. You also have a consolidated list for the handy man and don’t waste money to get him in for one or two items at a time.

2.       Your property will always be neat and tidy.

3.       Your property will stay market related.
